In Ruskin's Footsteps:
Your guide for this wonderful walk
over the picturesque Yewdale Fells is museum custodian Mike Humphreys. He
is an enthusiastic Ruskin scholar who enjoys sharing insights into the great
man's life and work.
You may know a lot about Ruskin, you may know hardly anything - we can still
guarantee that you will enjoy the walk !
One
of its great attractions is that it is literally off the beaten track - nicely
secluded with not a tourist in sight ! The route winds up steeply from the
base of Long Crag, providing rewarding views at every stage. It is soon possible
to see the whole of Coniston laid out behind you, and many of Ruskin's connections
with the locality are easily pointed out. Once you have gained the ground
above White Ghyll (the impressive waterfall which pours down to the Ambleside
road), a footpath leads along a marshy plateau, down to a stream and finally
up to the viewpoint at the top of Yewdale Crag itself. Ruskin was always
searching for interesting geological and
botanical samples up here. The route back features a juniper 'garden' and
leads you down the old peat road near Tilberthwaite, returning to Coniston
via Whin Woods.
The walk is not suitable for
young children or people unused to walking over rough ground. As the
weather can change quickly, wet weather clothing may be needed. The walk
can be tailored to your specific needs and interests. It covers a
distance of approximately 5 miles and generally takes about 4.5 hours (including
lunch stop, etc.) Do not hesitate to get in touch for further
information.
